Can the Keto Diet Cause Endocrine Disorders? (Chinese Subtitles)
In continuation of our Keto Diet series, internist Dr. Mark Savant sheds some light on the keto diet’s effect on the endocrine system and if pregnant women should be on the diet.
Transcript:
Can the keto diet lead to endocrine disorders, such as diabetes?
Dr. Savant:
No. In fact, there's been no evidence to show that. And in fact, when people are able to start to burn their own fat, many endocrine disorders like diabetes can get better.
Can the keto diet affect fertility?
Dr. Savant:
Typically, we do not see any effect on fertility. However, if a young woman wanted to follow the ketogenic diet, she should not do it while pregnant.
Esther Situ (Nutritionist, Diabetes Educator, AAMG Health Education Manager):
For pregnant women, if they have already been on the keto diet for a long time, it's okay?
Dr. Savant:
Yes, they should have no problems.
