About Teen HEAL

Teen Healthy Eating & Active Learning (HEAL) is an internship program designed to empower youths to improve their nutritional and physical well-being, as well as foster leadership skills. Interns are empowered with eight nutrition skills: building a healthy plate, shopping smart, making healthy snacks, eating outright, managing your weight, staying active, exploring beyond the basics, and cooking healthy foods. They learn various leadership skills such as program planning, goal setting, public speaking, communication strategies, social awareness, and they also get to meet mentors from different professions. Interns utilize their nutrition and leadership training to serve their peers by leading a teen health club at their schools and teaching in community fairs to promote healthy cooking, healthy eating habits, and active lifestyles. They learn from celebrity chef Martin Yan on healthy cooking skills in an annual DIY cooking symposium. HEAL interns also learn from Dr. Hali Hammer, Director of Ambulatory Care (SFDPH), and Dr. Sunny Pak, Medical Director at Chinatown Public Health Center. Thirteen interns from five high schools graduate from their internship program this year. They set up Teen HEAL clubs in three highs schools and reached over 150 teens through club meetings, community events, and training.
